That is right, July 2010 marks 1 year for the Nashville Nugget blog! Uhhh where did the year go??? Thanks to all my followers,friends & family out there in the world-wide web for adventuring on here with me!

Its Been Awhile!

Happy Summer!

Hello to all my furry friends and their non-furry families! Yes, its been awhile…time to catch up!

I’ve been a busy girl this summer. It started off pretty great with my Grandma coming to visit us in Nashville for the first time!

And then it was Bubbe and Zayde’s turn to visit!

I love being spoiled…

Recently my rents left me for a week to fend for myself…thats right the Nuggs was home alone! Ok well not exactly alone. Brentwood Petsitters(http://www.brentwoodpetsitters.com/) had the awesome task of taking care of me while my rents were away…not that I need anyone to take care of me..woof..

Mom and Dad were pleased when they returned home to see that I was in one piece and happy..and that I had not destroyed the place. Thanks Julie from Brentwood Petsitters for feeding me, walking me, and giving me love daily!

I did however punish them for a few days acting a bit wild and needy, but could you blame me? I missed my most favorite people in the world! Well we made up for lost time that is for sure. I got to experience my first cookout at a friend’s house last weekend! They had other doggies,kids,food,corn-hole, and my new favorite game….volleyball! who knew?

I had a blast pushing the V-ball around the grass with my nose entertaining mom and dad. I know how to make them laugh ;0) Then I decided it would be fun to pick the ball up with my mouth, pretty talented huh? Well as soon as I made nugget sized teeth marks in the ball my parents took it away. Party poopers! After 3 hours of party time we headed home. I slept good that night!

Sunday we headed off to the Patriotic Paws Brunch sponsored by Nashville paws magazine. What a riot! Check out some of the characters I met…

Nashville, A City Under Water..

Saturday May 1, 2010 marked the day that Nashville will never forget. Music city and the surrounding areas of Middle TN were drenched with over 16+ inches of rain in two days. Devastating floods,destruction and deaths soon followed…

Our family had friends that lost homes. Some families had people who lost their lives. Many families have been displaced by the floods, and so have their pets.

If you or someone you know has been displaced by the recent flooding and have pets that need shelter, please contact Animal Ark Animal Hospital at 615-778-0880.

And remember, folks: As much as we all want to get out and help, it’s very important to go about it in an organized, safe way. Plenty of our neighbors and friends are in need of food, clothing, shelter, water pumps and more. Start in your own neighborhood!

Donation opportunities:

Middle Tennessee Red Cross: Donate online at www.nashvilleredcross.org, by phone at 615-250-4300 or by mail at 2201 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville, TN 37203. Remember, the Red Cross is not a government agency and is funded solely by your local donations.
Kroger: Food donation barrels in all area Kroger stores, monetary donations accepted at checkout.
Second Harvest Food Bank: Provide monetary donations to Second Harvest HERE. Second Harvest is currently working to relocate their inventory from Metro Center.
Salvation Army: Monetary donations are preferred and can be made online HERE or by phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Drop off your donations of bottled water, mops, brooms, heavy duty work gloves, masks, sponges, squeegees, scrub brushes, plastic gloves, bleach, all purpose cleaner concentrate, trash bags and paper towels at the 631 Dickerson Road center.
The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee: In partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management, donate online to the Metro Nashville Disaster Response Fund and/or the Tennessee Emergency Relief Fund HERE (checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 440225, Nashville, TN, 37244).
Graceworks Ministries: Graceworks is working with the Red Cross to collect donations for flood victims. They are in need of non-perishable food items, toilet paper, detergent, dry beans, pasta, canned soup, toothbrushes, bottled water, clothing, diapers (sizes 2, 3 and 4) and furniture. Please separate men’s, women’s and children’s clothing donations. Drop off donations at 104 Southeast Parkway, Franklin TN.

On a lighter note,Thanks to the Gorton’s Fisherman, who appeared in our backyard out of nowhere during the storms,I was able do my business outside no problem!

Our family was fortunate to be spared during this time of tragedy! Our hearts and prayers go out to those that were not so lucky!

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Earliest Animal Rights Poem Discovered

Robert Krulwich, a correspondent from NPR(one of my Mom’s favorite radio news programs) reported on a story, April 21st, 2010 about of one of the first known animal rights manifesto’s, dated 1773, two years before the start of the American Revolution.

Chemist Joseph Priestley, is known to be one of the first scientists to identify Oxygen. He did so by studying mice to evaluate how they breathe, but unfortunately for the mice most of them paid the ultimate price for his discovery, their life. After many had died Priestley’s lab assistant Anna Barbauld decided to take action, and speak on behalf of the mice. Rock on Anna!

She wrote a poem in the voice of a mouse, who was appealing for its right to life and attached it to one of mice cages for Priestley to see. Here is a snapshot of that original poem…

Anna may have just started the animal rights revolution! Researchers are not sure of the outcome of Priestley’s lab animals, especially the mice, but one thing is known, the view of lab animals was shifted that day, not only in writing, but in the heart of a lab assistant that took a chance and stood up for one of Gods creatures. It only takes one to start a revolution..
